In 1991 at The Green Theatre of Gorky Park there was an action "Rock against the rain"
— that summer in Moscow was really rainy. Two guys of the band TIMEOUT hosted the show produced after their successful radio show on the first non-state SNC radio station. The TWISTERS performed there for the first time after their guitar player had died, as well as the new names
— mainstream MORAL CODE, bluesrock CROSSROADS and MEANTRAITORS, the 1st psychobillies in the country. MEANTRAITORS who had real short harcuts with thin pointed quiffs caused the jokes from the show hosts: "And noaoww onstage cyommme out
— look! — people-toothbrushes!" On which Stas Bogorsd instantly parried: "We're not toothbrushes, we're shoe brushes!" And started playing 380 beats per minute psychobilly. When the rain especially raged, the hosts stopped the show and shouted to the crowd: "And now all will twist paper lamps for 5 minutes!" The crowds, drunk from music and beer, joyfully went mad. When the hosts called: "Let's show the "fux" to the rain!" the forest of hands went up
skywards.
It was all very cheerful, motley bands (of motley quality) performed. Once onstage went a rockabilly outfit with the girl on vocals and guitar. On closer examination they turned out to be
Veronika Syomina (who shortly afterwards picked up a double bass), guitarist Oleg Bootenko, a trumpet player and the drummer
Eugene Lomakin
and the bass player Michael Gratchyov who right after the breakup of the
HAWAII
ISLES in 1991 as a rhythm section hung around out of business. Hardly could that performance be considered brilliant, but backstage they were approached by a guy, who'd introduced himself as "The Checkered" and had asked Lomakin with Gratchyov to join his band ALLIGATORS. It was Oleg Tchekin, who later took a surname Berezin and decided to try his hand at singing his favourite rockabilly songs.
ALLIGATORS were:
Oleg "the Checkered" Tchekin-Berezin — vocal
Oleg Bootenko — guitar
Eugene Lomakin
— drums
Michael Gratchyov — double bass
Vadim Zaidin
— occasional trumpet
This lineup played in the first Moscow musical club "Cafe Otradnoye", and their performance was recorded by the Program A" of the Russian TV alongside with the
MISTER TWISTER and MANGO MANGO.
In 1992 Oleg Ousmanov invites Bootenko to join the
TWISTER, and he plays some dates with the first and best rockabilly gang of the country. Then Oleg "Crocodile" Bootenko goes with the ALLIGATORS on their only tour to Baikonur space rocket launching site and gets his diploma of an electronic engineer, and joins the more renowned and moneyed outfit for steadier gigs and higher profile performances. Soon
the bass player Gratchyov also leaves for SHAKIN ' SPIRIT, a very solid cover bar band. Crocodile's and Gratchyov's place are soon filled by a guitarist Vasya and double bass player Anton the Goose from FILYOVSKY PARK. The sound changes from traditional rockabilly to neorockabilly, and in 1993 the band records a demo
— 5 songs in English, one of which is released on the compilation "Delayed Action Mine" (Hotrod Records, 1997).
Soon the pianist Michael Deryabin (SHAKERS) joins the ALLIGATORS on rhythm guitar, and the Goose on a double bass sometimes is substituted by Oleg Tishchenko (SHAKERS). Now the drummer Lomakin leaves. Vasya, both talented guitarist and composer and his staunch partner Anton the Goose want to try to play psychobilly and form their own psychobilly trio BEERY BENDERS with punk vocalist Rem. At first they perform in 2 bands then leave. In 1994-95 the Goose with Vasya played already alternative in a new outfit AKOOLA KARAKOOLA. Their further traces are lost but for rumours, that Vasya was in jail.
And what about the ALLIGATORS? The group breaks up, and the Checkered forms the new qaurtet
SKYROCKETS.
Short reunion of the band took place in 2000, when Eugene Lomakin with a bass player Nick Vtorov
(GREASE
DREAM) did some shows as ALLIGATORS helping out the Checkered. However, it's nothing unusual for they were
the rhythm section SKYROCKETS. For them it's a side project because they have a
steady gig with the
OFFBEAT, and they give up the ALLIGATORS. The band becomes
virtual: the Checkered hires whoever is available at the moment. |
