JAILBREAKERS

They are another band of the second Moscow wave. The first drummer of JAILBREAKERS was a well-known among rockabilly/blues musicians Ritchie (Riad Madatov), who could sing and play the guitar and the bass. Ritchie is notorious for being auditioned as a guitar player for MISTER TWISTER, but had flopped.

Later he was a roadie with the CROSSROADS and tried to play in different rock outfits of every styles possible — from blues upto grunge. Back then, in 1992, Ritchie along with Ivan 'Boatswain' Voronov (vocal, guitar) formed a new band. Alexey "Gans" Kiaitsev completed the trio on doublebass.
It's not that the first Boatswain's band PORTWAY did not last long, it was not serious at all. Acoustic gigs in Arbat Street and hanging out with punters for the sake of a bottle of wine instead of rehearsing and music resulted in the breakup of a very poor band. The musicians learned to play sing right onstage, nor did they particularly sweat about honing their skills. Yet they recorded their 1st album "Crazy 50s".

In 1994 the lineup changed:
Alexey "Gans" Kiaitsev — doublebass
Ivan "Boatswain" Voronov — vocal/guitar
Yegor Matveyev — drums
Ilia Karpov — keyboards
Eugene Ilnitsky — lead guitar

The quintet gig around the capital and in spring of 1996 record a new album "Jailbox". As a special guest a prominent local blues singer Nick Arootyunov (BLUES LEAGUE) does a Presley tune on it.
JAILBREAKERS differed from many bands by closely following Dixie traditions: the 13 star-flags at shows were flowing, rockabilly slogans were shouted, and the the atmosphere was heated. The repertoir also met the thing: what with the just "Dixie", another Southern civil war military hymn 1861 (recorded with marching drum and flute). Or "Wild One", inspired by the film with Marlon Brando. 'Boatswain' was seriously into vocals and having gained some experience could do yodel singing.
As one of the site visitors noted, in mid-late 90s JAILBREAKERS were a well-known outfit among rockabilly punters. They would not miss any festival, yet they hadn't gone any further. Just like their first album, the 2nd one had not been released. Their biggest break came with 3 songs on the compilation "Rockabilly Girl". They now perform sporadically.
