Here you are, meet the RUNAWAYS. The brief official history looks like this. The band was formed in September, 1997. In the first lineup performed: singer Nikita Reelov, bass player Veronika Syomina (GHOST HUNTERS, DIXIE BROTHERS), guitarist Ilja Obshadko (ALAZAN VALLEY, LOS PIRATOS, SO CLOSE), drummer Anton Khotylev (COCKTAIL).
Besides the usual club dates the band played of Volga GAZ21 fan club congregations, at the "Autoexotica-98" car show, at the Volunteer Festivals at Taxman club, etc. Taras Seenarevsky becomes the band manager.
In 1998 Ilja Obshadko leaves. Reelov follows him, and at the end of 1999 tries his luck in the jump-n-jive band
CORAL
REEVES. After it the drummer changes as well, Cyrill Pavlov starts to drum for them. But internal friction result in Syomina's and Seenarevsky's decision to form a new band SLEEPWALKERS and leave.
But
to tell you everything, without throwing out
all the words from songs, Serge Papkov in 1988-90 years was the president of MISTER TWISTER fan club and as "Country Serge" signed the letters,
sending them all around the country. In the house of the Serge there were lots of
country music records (including Hank Williams) — real rarity in Russia in those times. Soon Serge got into country guitar and started to look for the adherents. For some time he was in short living C&W outfit BEANS FOR BREAKFAST and later in LONG RIDERS and
SLEEPWALKERS perfecting his skills. He intentionally avoids rockabilly licks so
as to be different from other guitar players making the band sound differently
as well.
Nika Syomina is the only lady, who plays a double bass in this country. Rockabilly, I would add, for I know the woman who plays classics. Besides she writes verses, prose, lyrics and music to songs. And professionally drives the
car, sometimes she would even drive a taxi. Such highlight.
Nikita Reelov graduated from the Moscow Institute For Foreighn Relations, where he studied Norwegian and English. (French he knew from childhood partially spent in Belgium.) Probably, therefore one couldn't not possibly call his English broken. Well and Nikita also is just a real cowboy. He's been dealing with horses for a long time and has recently taken to tend one-year old stallion (you can't call it a foal any more). Once at some gig among the punters he met an urban cowboy in perfect leather and a Stetson hat. The singer, as he remembers it, was fresh from with stable in dirty jeans and boots. Tired and slightly drunk, Nikita had approached the guy in cowboy attire and asked: "You ever smelt horseshit?
"An d the horseshit was exactly what stuck to my own boots since
the morning as I couldn't scratch it off. Word after word, the business
went to fighting. Then all problems were settled, nevertheless both the punters and Reelov remember the incindent.
In February, 2001 Veronika Syomina with Taras decided to reanimate RUNAWAYS, as she wrote more songs in Russian, including the big hit "Wait". Now lineup is:
Nikita Reelov — vocal/rhythm guitar
Veronika Syomina — upright bass
Serge Papkov (SLEEPWALKERS, LONG RIDERS) — guitar
Anton Goobanov (NONSENSE) — guitar |
